The social media platforms Snapchat and Instagram

Celebrities are increasingly embracing the trailblazing trend of Snapchat and Instagram stories to connect and engage with their fans according to experts.

With now 200 million users of Snapchat and 400 million users of Instagram, they are popular platforms for online self-promotion for celebrities.

“Social media has led to a fundamental way for the celebrities to build their image and a relationship with their fan base”, says Frank Cooper, chief marketing officer at Buzzfeed.

Today the celebrities tell themselves what is going on in their life. In contrast to their polished and glamourous posts on their Instagram account, Snapchat and Instagram stories add a more casual approach. The stories seem more real, spontaneous and personal in the ten seconds sequences as they go beyond the basic selfie and promotion of their latest work.

Frank Cooper says, “with these new features [the Snapchat and Instagram stories], where the celebrities let their fans into their private lives by showing everyday glimpses, the celebrities attain an unfiltered, honest connection. High levels of authenticity and transparency are the key.”

The intention with the stories appear to be more financially motivated than the desire to share the ‘behind the scenes’ moments of their life according to Ryan Shelley, managing director at PepperIT and a social media expert.

“Celebrities, like Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry, master Instagram and Snapchat successfully to boost their careers and stardom. Celebrities using these platforms actively and in an engaging way get up to 30% more paid than the celebrities who don’t,” he says.

Before the celebrities made an effort to conceal their lives from the public and now they reveal as much as possible to their fans on social media. Even though, the celebrities share a lot, there is also a lot they choose not to share. There still is a difference between their private life and professional social life - their real identity and online celebrity identity.
